Posing on the path high in the Alps.
Our day in the Alps was a "High" moment on our trip, literally, as we spent a sun-soaked afternoon hiking through some of the most beautiful scenery we have ever seen! (In case you were wondering, I get paid based on how many times I begin words using the letter "S" - hence the last "s-filled" sentence!)
We caught the gondola up to a small village named Murren at an elevation of 5,000 feet. The town itself is made up of a cluster of small houses and a "main-drag" that runs a half mile past a handful of restaurants, Bed & Breakfasts, and Ski Lodges. The hills are covered in a thick green grass, and across the valley the peaks of Eiger and Jungfrau can be seen. In a word: Breathtaking!
Using tips from our trusty guide, Rick Steves, we made our way to the Interlaken area in Southwestern Switzerland where the rolling green hills meet the snow-covered, jagged peaks of the Alps. The cool thing about this area is that many of the towns are fully functioning ABOVE THE STEEP CLIFFS - meaning the only way to access them is through cable car, small train, or gondola.

This dog refused to leave the water fountain... perhaps because he has appeared in Television commercials?!
After eating a light lunch with a million dollar view, we hiked DOWN for 45 minutes to the town of Gimmalwald. (Note to self: in the alps, always hike DOWN not UP!) This town is Rick Steves' favorite in the Alps (if not the whole world), and boasts about ZERO restaurants or any luxuries so to speak of. We were leaning on staying here due to his glowing reviews... however were very glad we didn't after taking a look at it! (Although it does make a great 10 minute walk... just a few wooden homes and hostels hugging the cliffs.)
It was simply a great day of clean air, photo ops, and fun! Off to Zurich!
