Big Wave Surfing... in Munich?

Guess the location: 1) Ireland? 2) Spain? 3) Portugal? 4) MUNICH!

It's a dark, dreary March afternoon in Munich.  Overcast skies and a brisk wind make Spring seem like a distant memory.  The perfect time to go... SURFING?  Yes, for a group of hard core surfers, the river through the English Gardens provides a perfect opportunity to catch one of the world's most unique (and surreal) waves!

Just hanging out, catching some waves.  Wetsuits are a must!

The water rushes from under a bridge, and the pumping mechanism causes the consistent 4 foot wave that locals love to shred, DESPITE A SIGN SAYING THAT SURFING HERE IS ILLEGAL.  I was told this law is never enforced.  Wet-suits are a must, almost year round, as the air temperature was in the high 30's and the water probably was not that much warmer.  In order to catch the wave, locals must place their surfboard into the wave and sort of jump onto it like a skateboarder.  Here's a video from YouTube:

One local girl told us the best part of surfing this wave was that you don't have to paddle.  Having surfed a fair bit myself, I must agree with her.  Although another major bonus is simple: NO SHARKS!

Waxing up a brand new board on the sidewalk.

Point Break, Urban Edition

This just goes to show that surfing is as much an attitude as it is a sport.  The locals that surf this wave are just like any other surfer in the world - looking for that "stoke" that comes from being on the face of the water.  When the weather gets warmer, you can be sure I will be trying this!!!
