Superbowl XLII. 4th Quarter. 3 Minutes Remaining. As Eli Manning is marching the New York Giants towards the endzone, we lean forward for a better view of the screen and move to the edge of our seats in anticipation. It’s 4:30am.
Welcome to Super Bowl MONDAY… where, thanks to an 8-hour time difference, Super Bowl Sunday now takes place a day later. The “Americanos” from the Elephants watched the game at the downtown bachelor pad of former player/coach Matteo, and had an excellent time. (Video soon to be posted). The experience was great – however it was definitely “different” than typical Super Bowl parties in the States. In fact, I think the best way to get an idea of what an Italian Super Bowl is truly like is to do a straight comparison with a similar American experience:
USA FOOD: BBQ Hamburgers or Meat, Chips, and other Junk Food
ITALY FOOD: Various Pastries
USA DRINK: Keg of Beer – probably Budweiser, or Soda
ITALY DRINK: Red Wine
USA PREGAME: Drinking and Eating, Possibly throwing the ball in the street
ITALY PREGAME: Nap from 7pm – 11pm
USA AUDIENCE: 95.7 Million People
ITALY AUDIENCE: 9... all in one condo in Catania
USA COMMERCIALS: Best part of game
ITALY COMMERCIALS: Confusing, although often include partial nudity
USA POSTGAME: Party continues into the night
ITALY POSTGAME: Breakfast
Advantage: You be the judge… but I can say that it was a very fun experience and one I will always remember. I can’t wait to read all the analysis in the USA Yesterday newspaper.
