Christie's All Star Cheer Camp

All-Stars Cheer Camp Team Photo

This past weekend, the SWARCO Raiders cheer teams participated in Christie's inaugural ALL-STARS CHEER CAMP.  It was an intense three days as Christie teamed with long-time friend and cheer coach Leroy Jordan to offer a crash course in cheer, dance, and stunting.  I don't personally know the first thing about cheer technique, but from the smiles on their faces and the sweat running down their cheeks, I could see they were both having fun and working hard!

The camp focused on teaching the fundamentals of cheerleading and emphasizing safety.  It was amazing to note the similarities of what they were teaching to all the basketball camps I attended growing up -- sure you want to slam dunk like Michael Jordan -- but first you must be able to play defense and be able to dribble the ball!  I'm sure the hard work the girls put in on this will pay off in the long run!

The first day of camp...

... and just like in America, with lots of flair!

Christie teaches a new cheer... emphasizing that Raiders is pronounced ending in "ERS" not the German pronunciation of "Raid-ahs..."

... while Leroy breaks down the dance moves.  I don't think I'll ever be able to get Black Eyed Peas "Boom Boom Pow" out of my head!

Getting ready to go up in the gym...

... and letting it fly outside.

Camp concluded on Saturday with the girls cheering at a SWARCO Raiders junior football game.  They busted out a great dance at halftime, and then stayed on to help the Silver and Black to a 41-0 victory.  In fact, the only rough moment of the game came not from the cheer team - but from a moment on the sidelines.  Leading by over 30 in the fourth quarter, special teams co-ordinator (and senior team kicker) Robert "Blitzy" called for an onside kick.  Perhaps he was a little over zealous in his first official game in the role, or just wanting to practice his stuff, but the other coaches on our sidelines were frantic that our opponent might view this as trying to run up the score.  Immediately we were all over him -- especially Head Coach Santos Carrillo -- and Blitzy's only defense was, "it was there..."  Classic moment!

Thank you to all the cheerleaders who attended.  It was a great camp!

Personally, my favorite part of this entire entry may be that you felt the need to identify Leroy as being at the far left in the second photo.
