Editors Note: Munich Architecture

More than meets the eye at the Marienplatz in Munich.

REALLY PLAYING FOR PIZZA EDITORS NOTE:

HERE AT RPP, WE STRIVE FOR ABSOLUTE ACCURACY IN OUR USUALLY EXAGGERATED AND OFTEN DOWNRIGHT EMBELLISHED STORIES.

Therefore, the following note is a follow-up to yesterday's article about Munich, particularly in the 4th picture down entitled "Baroque at its best," in which one CLAUDIO MANGANO, of Catania, Sicily, finds there to be some need for clarification.  The following words are his, not mine, but should paint a more clear picture as to what is really going on when I tried to add a little color to what otherwise people would have just stared at nonchalant and merely described as, "Pretty freakin' old."  Enjoy.

Dear RPP,

I was pretty intrigued but picture #4 in your Munich post, describing "baroque at its best".  I guess that pic was taken in Marienplatz and that building is the Old and New Town Hall right?  Those 2 towers on the back, left side, are part of Frauenkirche, the main cathedral and one of the most intresting gothic buildings in Munich.  The town hall should be gothic as well (Doesn't it remind you of the Duomo of Milano or Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris with its pointy pinnacles and its detached outside arches?)

Notre Dame in Paris = Baroque

Milan Duomo = Baroque

You're actually right when you say there's a lot of baroque (and i might add rococo as well) there in Munich since southern Germany went through an intense baroque-esque period during 1700s, "rejuvenating" the medieval gothic style into a more fashionable "frenchy" baroque-rococo style.  So...making long story short(ibidiem JJ)..i might not agree with your definition of "baroque at its best".  I think it would better be described as maybe Late Baroque (As Baroque started in 1600 and the Germans got it 100 years later.)  And yes, I did get an A+++++++ in art history.

Sincerely,
Claudio Mangano

RPP Note #2: Claudio, despite his knowledge of Late Baroque architecture, actually spends his time now with plants, not buildings.

Duomo di Milano and Notre Dame ARE GOTHIC...believe me!
Catania is BAROQUE.
Lil angels,curly curls,leaves,flowers=BAROQUE
Pointy pinnacles, monsters on top of em,counter arches, big heavy feeling due to big heavy size=GOTHIC

Lol,u take advantage of the fact that english is not my 1st language!
