A Blissful Day in Tuscany

A visit to Tuscany - and specifically the wine producing areas - is a sharp contrast to the PACE of normal European vacation experiences.  Instead of dashing from "3 Star Sight" to "3 Star Sight" (as most guidebooks rank them), elbowing fellow tourists on a torrid checklist of "Can't Miss Experiences" - a visit to this region is about forgetting your guidebook... instead letting the charm and beauty of the Italian Countryside sink into your soul.

On Monday, we spent a "Blissful Day" south out of Florence trying to do exactly that in the heart of Tuscany: The Chianti region.  Here wine tasting is more than a hobby - its a passion and a way of life.  As our rented Fiat (the modern cousin of the "500") hugged the curves of small country roads while racing away from the bustle of urban life, the bright blue sky, warm sun, and 100 shades of passing green whisked all of our worries away.

Our first stop off the SR222 (the most scenic route through the region) was at the 'Castello Vicchiomaggio' vineyard - a former Castle turned AGRITOURISMO (Bed & Breakfast / Winery / Restaurant) sitting high upon a hill.  In one survey it won 'Winemaker of the Year' for 1997, 2002, and 2005 - so we knew we were starting at a good place.  From its vantage point, you can see 360 degrees of rolling hills, geometrically perfect rows of vines, and endless valleys.  We sampled three wines here, and jealously chatted with an English woman who had been there for two weeks "just getting away from it all."  If I had an opportunity to spend more time here, than this would definitely make a perfect home base.  Click HERE for more info!

We then went across the valley, back to 'Castello di Verrazzanno' - the site of our last visit to the area on our photography trip.  (See the post from our last trip HERE!)  As we walked into the restaurant, I was greeted immediately by our host from last time, Fillippo, and it was like being among old friends.  (Not that it's a feather in my cap, but if you would have told me a year ago that I'd be recognized when walking into a Tuscan Winery, then I would say you were crazy!)

What proceeded next was truly a unique experience and the epitome of a perfect day in Tuscany: 3 HOUR LUNCH!

A great lunch with new friends.  Going around the table from left to right is my mom Holly, Donna, Darcey, John, Deana, my Dad Jim, Fillippo from the Winery, and Christie.

We were lucky to be seated with another foursome, a group of very nice people from Connecticut.  Immediately we were chatting like old friends - as though the 'spirit of travelers' immediately bonded people who are all seeking out new experiences in life.  This is one of the most enjoyable parts of traveling - meeting great people with similar interests and equally funny stories!

Just for the record, our 6 course meal included a different wine with each course, including:

1) Bread with Olive Oil & Salt, Along with Various Meats and Cheeses.

2) Penne Pasta with Tomato, Al'Arrabiata.

3) Lean Pork with White Beans and Salad.

4) Thin Mozerella with Spicy Sauce.

5) Coffee and Biscotti

6) Chunks of Parmesan served with Aged Balsamico
