In a wild shoot-out finale to the 2008 Italian Football League season, the Bergamo Lions outlasted the Bolzano Giants 56-54 to win the Superbowl in Cattolica, Italy.
Playing on a hot summer night before 2,500 fans, the Lions jumped out to a 49-28 halftime lead and survived a late rally by the physical Giants to repeat as champions. The Giants, led by star tailback Reggie Green, were hoping to end their season a perfect 12-0... but followed the same fate as the NFL New England Patriots in losing a heartbreaking finish. Bergamo's defensive line did a good job containing Green for most of the game, and allowed their own running back to break free which set the tone for the game.
In a season that routinely saw scoreboards (if there were any) lighting up, it was a fitting end to an incredible season of football here in Italy!
